Get Your Display Ready for 2021!

There are literally hundreds of seed products on the market today.  Each vendor names it’s products differently.  When a farmer enters the product name into their display, the name should be standardized.  For example, if a farmer plants Pioneer seed corn, they might enter “P1555CHR” into their monitor while a different farmer who also plants the same product might enter the product name into their display as “p1555chr”.  Others may enter the same product as “P 1555-chr”.  Computers are not intelligent and can’t understand that all 3 products are actually the same!  To a computer – it sees “P1555CHR” and “p1555chr” and “P 1555-chr” as 3 different products.  Therefore – standardized product names are a must!

Standardized product names allows grower’s planting and harvest data to be pooled anonymously with other clients in my database of nearly 50,000+ row-crop acres that met Precision Land Service’s data quality requirements. Sharing this pooled data is powerful for an individual grower – it gives them access to ‘real-world’ planting and yield results by hybrid/variety, soil type, soil fertility, and many other parameters tracked in my system for all of my clients that had the necessary GPS-based harvest, soil sampling, and planting data.

Please follow the tips outlined below to create standardized product names on your display:

  • Before beginning field work this year, please delete all monitor data for previous crops.

  • Product names should match the BOLD lettering on the seed bag label

  • Do not include “as-planted” trial descriptions in product names (“with starter”, “no downforce”, etc.). Document “as-planted” trials (e.g., starter fertilizer, population, down force, pesticide treatments, etc.) in Region Name.

The following are examples of standardized product names for several common products:

  • Soybeans - S27-M8X, AG36X6, P37A27X, S30-M9X, 3789X2, Garfield 2034LLGT27, 3120E

  • Corn – P1185AM, DKC63-91RIB, 6557V2P, CP5335VT2P/RIB, W7878RIB

Enter Seed Company Names exactly like the seed bag label. For example, Pioneer, DEKALB, Asgrow, Wyffels, Golden Harvest, Dyna-Gro, Croplan Genetics, NK, Beck’s, etc. should match this formatting exactly.
